Basilica of Our Lady of Ransom Vallarpadam

Basilica of Our Lady of Ransom Vallarpadam is a historic Catholic pilgrim centre located on Vallarpadam Island near Fort Kochi, Ernakulam, Kerala. Built by Portuguese missionaries in 1524, the church holds the distinction of being one of the earliest Christian shrines in Asia, originally dedicated to the Holy Spirit before its later dedication to Our Lady of Ransom. A devastating flood destroyed the structure in 1676, after which it was rebuilt on the same site, preserving the sacred picture of the Blessed Virgin Mary brought by Portuguese sailors.

The Basilica of Our Lady of Ransom Vallarpadam gained special recognition when Pope Leo XIII declared it a special church in 1888, and the Union Government named it a major pilgrim centre in 1951. In 2004, the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India elevated it to National Shrine status, and Pope John Paul II later granted it the honorific title of Minor Basilica, cementing its importance among Kerala's Christian heritage sites.

Devotees across faiths visit this Vallarpadam church throughout the year to seek blessings from Vallarpadathamma, the revered image of Mother Mary. Local fishing communities bring new boats here for blessing before their maiden voyage into the sea, reflecting the basilica's deep connection to Kochi's coastal life. The annual feast, celebrated from September 16 to 24, draws large crowds with vibrant processions and festivities that unite people beyond religious boundaries.
