Description:

Napier Museum Nanthancodu is one of Thiruvananthapuram's most treasured heritage landmarks, standing gracefully amid the green surroundings of Nanthancodu in Kerala. Conceived in the mid-1850s under the vision of King Uthram Thirunal and later completed in 1880, this museum was named in honour of Lord Napier, the then Governor of Madras. It is celebrated as one of the oldest art and history museums in India, drawing travellers, students, and researchers who wish to explore Kerala's royal and cultural past.

The museum building itself is a masterpiece of Indo-Saracenic architecture, designed by British architect Robert Fellowes Chisholm. It beautifully blends Kerala, Mughal, Chinese, Gothic, and Italian architectural influences, visible in its domed roofs, ornate minarets, stained glass windows, and intricately patterned brickwork. A remarkable feature of the structure is its natural ventilation system, which keeps the interiors cool without any mechanical support, reflecting the ingenuity of 19th-century design.

Inside, Napier Museum Nanthancodu houses an extensive collection of over 500 artifacts, including ancient bronze idols, delicate ivory carvings, temple chariots, historic ornaments, weapons, traditional costumes, and rare shadow puppets depicting scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata. The museum also holds a notable numismatic collection with thousands of old coins, along with wooden sculptures and archaeological finds that trace centuries of Kerala's artistic evolution.

Surrounded by lush gardens and located near the city zoo, Napier Museum Nanthancodu offers a peaceful yet enriching experience for visitors of all ages. Whether you are a history enthusiast, an architecture admirer, or a curious traveller, this museum remains an essential stop for anyone exploring the cultural landmarks of Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.
