Peechi-Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the most rewarding nature destinations in Thrissur district, Kerala. It was established in 1958, which makes it the second-oldest sanctuary in the state. It spreads over about 125 square kilometres, roughly 20 km east of Thrissur city. Access is along Chimmini Dam Road near Pariyaram, and the surrounding hills, streams and dense forest make it a peaceful retreat from city life.
The sanctuary lies in the catchment area of the Peechi and Vazhani dams. It forms part of the Palapilli-Nelliampathy forest belt and borders the Chimmini Wildlife Sanctuary. Its forests range from tropical evergreen and semi-evergreen to moist deciduous, and the area receives heavy monsoon rain. The terrain is undulating, and the highest point is Ponmudi, at about 923 metres. Visitors can enjoy forest scenery, nature walks and trekking in the cooler months.
Biodiversity is the main attraction here. The sanctuary has over 50 varieties of orchids, rare medicinal plants and valuable trees such as teak and rosewood. It is home to more than 25 mammal species, including leopard, gaur, sambar, spotted deer and Asian elephant. Bird lovers can spot more than 100 species, along with various snakes and lizards, so it suits photographers, students and wildlife enthusiasts alike.
Planning a visit is simple. Thrissur is the nearest major railway station, and regular buses run from the city towards Peechi. A rest house and an information centre at Peechi help visitors with accommodation and guidance. The best time to visit is generally October to March, when the weather is pleasant and trails are easier to explore. Nearby picnic spots and boating options make it a good day trip for families, nature clubs and travellers exploring Kerala’s wildlife.
