Description:

Shri Mahadeva Temple Ettumanoor is one of the most revered and ancient Shiva shrines in Kerala, located in the town of Ettumanoor in Kottayam district. Popularly known as Ettumanoorappan Temple, it stands as a magnificent example of traditional Kerala temple architecture and continues to draw thousands of devotees and visitors from across the state and beyond. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is counted among the significant Shiva temples of Kerala, alongside other prominent shrines in the region.

According to temple tradition and local legends, the Pandavas along with sage Vyasa are believed to have worshipped at this very site during their exile, lending the temple deep mythological and historical significance. The name Ettumanoor is said to have originated from the Malayalam words meaning "the land of deer," connecting the place to ancient folklore. The present structure, including its striking gopuram and the fortified walls surrounding the temple complex, was reconstructed around 1542 CE, and it has stood as a spiritual landmark ever since.

The temple is especially celebrated for its exquisite mural paintings, with the fresco depicting Pradosha Nritham, the cosmic dance of Shiva, regarded as one of the finest examples of traditional wall art in Kerala. The copper-plated roofing, the golden flagstaff, and intricately carved wooden interiors reflect the craftsmanship of a bygone era. Alongside the main sanctum of Lord Shiva, the temple complex also houses smaller shrines dedicated to Lord Ganapathi and Lord Sastha, along with other subordinate deities.

Every year, the temple's annual festival held in the Malayalam month of Kumbham attracts large crowds of pilgrims who take part in the elaborate rituals and processions. Managed by the Travancore Devaswom Board, Shri Mahadeva Temple Ettumanoor remains an important centre of worship, heritage, and cultural pride for the people of Kottayam and the wider Kerala community, making it a must-visit destination for devotees and heritage enthusiasts alike.
