Thrissur Pooram Exhibition Ground is one of the most iconic and historically significant exhibition venues in Kerala, located at the sprawling Thekkinkadu Maidan in the heart of Thrissur city. Spread across a vast 65-acre public ground that surrounds the ancient Vadakkumnathan Temple, this exhibition ground has become synonymous with one of the state's grandest cultural and commercial gatherings. The maidan itself was created by Rama Varma Sakthan Thampuran and is operated by the Cochin Devaswom Board, remaining open to the public throughout the year. For anyone searching for a premier exhibition ground in Thrissur, Keralam, this location stands out for its scale, heritage, and central position in the city.
The origins of the exhibition trace back to 1932, when it was organized by freedom fighters and youth groups in Thrissur under the name Swadeshi Exhibition. It was jointly organised by the Paramekkavu Bagavathi Temple Devaswom and the Thiruvambadi Sri Krishna Temple Devaswom, and later the Thrissur Municipal Corporation took charge of it until 1963, after which it was handed back to the two Devaswoms and renamed the Thrissur Pooram Exhibition. This rich lineage of nearly a century makes Thrissur Pooram Exhibition Ground far more than a temporary fairground; it is a living tradition passed down through generations of organizers and visitors.
Every year, the exhibition unfolds over a period of roughly forty to fifty days, typically running from April through the third week of May, coinciding with the festivities of Thrissur Pooram. It is widely regarded as the largest exhibition in Keralam in terms of both attendance and floor space, drawing traders, manufacturers, craftsmen, and entertainment stalls from across the state and beyond. Visitors can expect a lively mix of agricultural displays, industrial products, cultural showcases, amusement rides, and food stalls, all set against the backdrop of the historic Vadakkumnathan Temple.
Given its location on Devaswom land, the ground is carefully regulated, with the Cochin Devaswom Board overseeing usage rights each season. Thrissur Pooram Exhibition Ground continues to attract lakhs of visitors annually, making it an unmissable destination for shopping, entertainment, and cultural experience in Thrissur. Its blend of tradition, scale, and central accessibility keeps it firmly established as one of Kerala's most cherished exhibition grounds.
