Chirakkal Caves is an ancient rock-cut heritage site in Thrissur, Kerala, near Pengamuck (PIN 680544). Also known as the Burial Caves of Kattakambal or Katakampil, it dates to the Iron Age megalithic period and is listed as Archaeological Survey of India monument N-KL-24. It is a quiet, authentic stop for anyone curious about Kerala’s prehistoric past.
The site is a subterranean burial complex cut into laterite rock. It has two circular chambers, and each opens into four smaller antechambers. Each chamber has a carved bench, which shows the skill of the people who built it thousands of years ago. Researchers have also noted animal artwork and undeciphered symbols, and some scholars suggest the cave may have served a purpose beyond burial.
Chirakkal Caves stands out among the megalithic burial sites of Thrissur district. Its design differs from the Kudakkal, Topikkal and Pathikal sites, which makes it especially interesting to students, archaeology enthusiasts, photographers and heritage travellers. It is often studied alongside the rock-cut caves of Eyyal and Chowannur, which have similar benches and layouts.
The village of Chirakkal lies about 15 kilometres from Thrissur city, on the Cherpu–Thriprayar road, beside the Karuvannur River. The surrounding landscape of paddy fields and coconut groves makes the visit calm and scenic. Visitors should wear comfortable footwear, take care inside the narrow chambers and respect the protected monument. Chirakkal Caves is a good choice for a half-day heritage trip from Thrissur, whether you come for history, photography or education.
