Itty Achuthan Memorial KAU Botanical Garden is a peaceful green space at Vellanikkara, Thrissur, close to the main campus of Kerala Agricultural University. It is one of the notable botanical gardens in Thrissur, Kerala. The garden is named in honour of Itty Achuthan, the 17th-century Ayurvedic physician whose knowledge of local plants became part of Kerala’s scientific history.
Itty Achuthan was the main source of ethno-medical information for Hortus Malabaricus, the famous botanical treatise on the medicinal flora of Malabar. It was compiled during the Dutch period under Governor Hendrik van Rheede. He drew on his experience as a herbal physician and on palm-leaf manuscripts handed down in his family. This garden carries that legacy forward by celebrating Kerala’s traditional plant wisdom and its healing heritage.
The garden sits in the green surroundings of the Vellanikkara campus. It suits students, botany enthusiasts, researchers and nature lovers who want to learn about medicinal herbs and tropical vegetation. Kerala Agricultural University is a leading centre for agricultural education and research, which gives the garden a strong learning context. Visitors can take a calm walk, observe different plant species and appreciate why conserving Kerala’s biodiversity matters.
The garden is easy to reach by road from Thrissur town, and its address is Vellanikkara, Thrissur, Keralam 680656. Families, school groups, photographers and plant lovers will find it a refreshing stop for a few quiet hours away from the city. Because it is part of a university campus, visiting arrangements can vary, so it is sensible to confirm access details before you travel.
