Paniyeli Poru Eco Tourism Center is a peaceful nature destination at Ezhattumugham in Ernakulam district, Kerala. It sits along the Periyar River, which flows between Malayattoor in the north and Paniyeli in the south. The name comes from the old raftsmen who carried bamboo logs downstream and struggled against the river’s strong currents. “Poru” is the Malayalam word for fight. Today the spot is known for its scenery and quiet charm.
The centre is a good choice for a one-day trekking trip. A riverside path of about 1.5 km leads to a milky waterfall. After roughly 400 metres, visitors cross the river on foot and continue about a kilometre through the forest. You will pass small islands scattered across the water. The trek is easy when the water level is low. It is open from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with a small entry fee of Rs. 20 for adults and Rs. 10 for children aged 5 to 13. Fees and availability can change, so confirm before you go.
The lush forest around the centre is home to many birds and other wildlife, so it appeals to photographers, families and nature lovers. The area is also a popular filming location. It stays cool and refreshing in summer. Wear sturdy footwear, since leeches are common on the forest path in wet weather. Avoid the river crossing when the water is high.
The centre is about 20 km from Perumbavoor and 35 km from Aluva, and roughly 27 km from Cochin International Airport. Roads close to the site can be rough, so plan your travel time. For bookings and information, call +91 8547604200.
