Poomala Dam

Poomala Dam is an irrigation dam and tourist spot at Killannur in Thrissur district, Kerala, about 12 km east of Thrissur town. It sits roughly 94.5 metres above sea level, surrounded by rubber plantations, trees and quiet hills. Many people choose it for a calm break from city life, and it is one of the better-known places to visit in the Thrissur area.

The history of the dam goes back to 1939, when a division weir was built in the Poomala valley. The reservoir was commissioned in 1968 and is looked after by the Minor Irrigation Department of Kerala. In 2008 the District Tourism Promotion Council began beautification work around the site, and it was declared a tourist centre in March 2010. The tourist area includes a 600-metre walkway with handrails, a community hall, a cafeteria and toilet facilities.

Visitors can sit on the benches facing the reservoir, walk along the lake edge, or take a ticketed boat ride. Cafes and small eateries near the dam serve refreshments. The area is especially pretty during the monsoon, when the cascading steps and the lake are at their best. Nearby attractions include Pathazhakundu Dam, the Cheppara caves and Pamboorampara rock, so the dam combines well with a full-day trip. During heavy rain the shutters are sometimes opened, so visitors should follow any warnings from the authorities and stay away from restricted areas.

The dam is about a 30-minute drive from Thrissur city. You can reach it by taxi or by local buses heading towards Wadakanchery. Weekends tend to be crowded, so a weekday visit is quieter.
