Bhagavathy Temple Kodungallur is one of Kerala's most revered and ancient shrines, located on Thekkenada Road in Kodungallur, Thrissur district. Dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali, worshipped here as Sree Kurumba Bhagavathy, the temple traces its legendary origins to sage Parashurama, who is said to have established the shrine to honor the goddess after her fierce battle with the demon Daruka. The temple also holds deep ties to the Silappathikaram epic, with local tradition connecting it to Kannaki, the epic's righteous heroine.
Architecturally and spiritually, the temple follows the Rurujit Vidhaana consecration pattern, a tantric arrangement placing Lord Shiva and Lord Ganesha at opposite ends with the Sapta Matrikas, or Seven Mothers, positioned between them. This layout reflects the temple's unique blend of Shaivite and Shakti worship traditions, making it a significant center for devotees seeking the blessings of the Divine Mother in her powerful form.
The temple is most famous for the Kodungallur Bharani festival, held annually during the Malayalam month of Meenam. This month-long celebration draws thousands of devotees, particularly from northern Kerala, and features rituals such as Kaavu Theendal, Kozhikkallu Moodal, and the ceremonial hoisting of the festival flag. The Aswathy Kaavu Theendal, performed by oracles in trance-like devotion, stands out as the most striking ritual, symbolizing communion with the goddess.
Beyond the Bharani season, the temple observes daily rituals and special occasions like Navarathri with grand lamp ceremonies. Its proximity to other heritage sites, including the ancient port town of Muziris, adds historical depth to a visit. For devotees and travelers exploring Thrissur's spiritual landscape, Bhagavathy Temple Kodungallur remains an essential and unforgettable destination.
