Description:

Sree Kurumba Bagavathi Temple Kodungallur is one of the oldest and most revered Bhadrakali shrines in Kerala, located in the historic town of Kodungallur, Thrissur district. Believed to have been established over 1800 years ago during the reign of the Chera dynasty, this sacred site is considered the moola kshetram, or origin temple, of all Bhadrakali temples across the state. The presiding deity, Goddess Bhagavathi, is worshipped here in her fierce "ugra" form, and the temple is regarded as the head of sixty-four Bhadrakali shrines in the region.

Legend connects the temple to Sage Parasurama, who is said to have built it after seeking Lord Shiva's help to defeat the demon Daruka. Another popular belief ties the site to the Tamil epic Silappathikaram, where the heroine Kannaki is said to have attained union with the goddess at this very location. Adi Shankaracharya is also believed to have consecrated five powerful Sri Chakras here, which devotees regard as the spiritual source of the deity's energy.

The temple follows traditional Kerala temple architecture, featuring intricate woodwork, sloping roofs, and ornate murals that reflect centuries of cultural heritage. It is best known for the annual Bharani festival, a vibrant and unique celebration marked by rituals such as Kavutheendal and the singing of traditional Bharani Pattu, drawing thousands of devotees and visitors from across India.

Located at Kodungallur, Kerala 680664, the temple remains a significant spiritual and cultural landmark in Thrissur district. Devotees visit throughout the year seeking blessings, while the temple's rich mythology, ancient rituals, and architectural beauty continue to attract pilgrims, historians, and travellers interested in Kerala's temple traditions.
