Madayi Kavu Bhagavati Temple Pazhayangadi is one of the most revered Bhadrakali shrines in North Kerala, located atop the scenic Madayipara hill near Pazhayangadi in Kannur district. Also known as Thiruvarkadu Bhagavathi Temple, the deity here is worshipped as the fierce form of Bhadrakali, and tantrics in the vicinity address her as Tiruvarkkad Achchi. Regarded as the "mother temple" of Bhadrakali worship, this ancient shrine carries deep historical and spiritual significance for devotees across the region.

The temple has long been associated with ruling dynasties such as the Mushikas, Kolathunad, and Chirakkal, who considered the fierce goddess their family deity. The temple was originally under the control of the Kolathiri kings and is now managed by the Malabar Devaswom Board. According to popular legend, the goddess once resided at the Rajarajeshwara Temple in Taliparamba, but being a non-vegetarian deity, she requested a separate shrine of her own, which led to the founding of Madayi Kavu. Another legend connects her to the slaying of the demon Darika, after which Lord Shiva directed Sage Parashurama to consecrate this hilltop shrine in her honour.

Beyond the main sanctum, the temple complex houses other deities including Shiva, Saptha Mathrika, Ganapathy, Veerabhadra, Kshetrapala, and Shasthavu. The premises also include the Aarattu pond used for rituals and the historically significant Juuda Kulam, or "Jew Pond," linked to the region's old Jewish trading community. Devotees visit the temple seeking protection from black magic and negative influences, and the annual festivals here draw large crowds from across Kannur and neighbouring districts, especially during the Kozhi Kalasham rituals.

Perched on Madayipara hill, the temple also offers sweeping views of the Arabian Sea, with the surrounding hill known for its seasonal wildflowers and rich birdlife. Visitors are advised to follow the traditional dress code, with men expected to wear mundu and women typically in sarees or salwar kameez inside the sanctum.
