Description:

Shree Ananthapadmanabha Swamy Temple Ananthapura is one of the most revered Vaishnavite shrines in Kerala, located amidst a tranquil lake at Ananthapura village near Kumbla in Kasaragod district. Dedicated to Lord Ananthapadmanabha, a form of Lord Vishnu reclining on the serpent Anantha, this temple holds a unique place among Kerala's sacred sites as the only lake temple in the state. Devotees from across South India visit this holy shrine, drawn by its spiritual aura and unmatched natural setting.

The temple's origins trace back nearly a thousand years, believed to date to the ninth century. According to popular legend, the sage Vilwamangalam performed penance here, and Lord Vishnu is said to have appeared before him as a playful child before merging into a great tree that transformed into the sacred sanctum. This site is also regarded by many devotees as the original moolasthanam, or spiritual origin, connected through legend to the famous Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple of Thiruvananthapuram.

Architecturally, the sanctum stands in the middle of a lake spanning roughly two acres, connected to the outer temple complex by a small bridge. The outer walls of the sanctum display remarkable mural paintings and wood carvings depicting Puranic themes, including scenes from the Dasavataram. Another point of fascination for visitors is the temple's resident vegetarian crocodile, considered a guardian spirit of the sacred waters and a subject of many local legends.

Surrounded by lush greenery and calm waters, Shree Ananthapadmanabha Swamy Temple Ananthapura offers a peaceful retreat for pilgrims and travelers exploring Kasaragod. Its serene lakeside location, rich mythology, and centuries-old traditions make it an essential stop for anyone interested in Kerala's spiritual and cultural heritage. Visitors can easily combine a trip here with other attractions in the Kumbla and Kasaragod region.
