Madhur Shree Madanantheshwara Siddi Vinayaka Temple

Madhur Shree Madanantheshwara Siddi Vinayaka Temple is one of the most revered Hindu shrines in Kasaragod, Kerala, standing gracefully on the banks of the Madhuvahini river. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, worshipped here as Madanantheshwara, and Lord Ganapathi in his Siddhi Vinayaka form, this ancient temple draws devotees from Kerala, Karnataka, and beyond. Its unique gaja-prishta (elephant-back shaped) architecture and serene riverside setting make it a peaceful spiritual destination for pilgrims and travellers alike.

The temple's origins trace back to the 10th century, when it was built by the Mayippadi rulers of Kumbla and later renovated in the 15th century. According to local legend, a woman from the Tulu Moger community discovered a self-manifested Shiva Linga on the riverbank, giving the temple its name. Another popular legend describes how a young boy's drawing of Ganapathi on the sanctum wall miraculously grew into a large idol, affectionately called Boddajja or Bodda Ganesha, who eventually became the temple's principal attraction.

Though Shiva remains the presiding deity, it is Lord Ganapathi who receives greater devotion, with the idol installed facing south inside the main sanctum. The temple is counted among the six ancient Ganapathi shrines of Tulunadu. Historical accounts also mention Tipu Sultan's invasion, when he reportedly abandoned his plan to destroy the temple after drinking water from its sacred well, leaving behind a sword mark still visible today.

Intricate wood carvings depicting scenes from the Ramayana adorn the temple structure, reflecting exceptional craftsmanship from centuries past. The temple hosts vibrant annual festivals along with special rituals like Moodappam, attracting large crowds of devotees. It also conducts Veda and Sanskrit classes for young students during summer vacations, keeping ancient traditions alive. Located about 7 km from Kasaragod town, Madhur Temple remains an important spiritual and cultural landmark for visitors seeking blessings and tranquility in North Kerala.
