Description:

Rajarajeswari Temple Mullakkal is a nearly 500-year-old Hindu shrine located in the heart of Alappuzha, Kerala. Dedicated to Goddess Rajarajeswari, popularly known as Mullakkal Devi or Mullakkal Amma, the temple stands as one of the most revered spiritual landmarks in the region. It is maintained by the Travancore Devaswom Board and continues to draw devotees from across Kerala and beyond, seeking the blessings of the Goddess who represents supreme divine feminine power.

The temple's origin is wrapped in fascinating legends passed down through generations. One popular story tells of exiled soldiers from Thekkumkur who brought the deity's idol to a jasmine garden, after which King Devanarayana of Chembakassery built a shrine in her honor. Another version narrates how the king dreamt of the Goddess expressing her wish to reside in his kingdom, leading to the temple's construction at this very spot. The name Mullakkal itself is derived from the abundance of jasmine (mulla) that once flourished around the sanctum.

Built in the traditional Kerala architectural style, the temple features intricately carved wooden structures and a distinct two-storied design. A unique aspect of worship here is that the Goddess is believed to manifest in three different forms through the day, as Parvathi in the morning, Lakshmi at noon, and Saraswathi in the evening. The temple complex also houses shrines for Lord Krishna, Nagas, and other deities, surrounded by serene greenery and a peaceful temple pond.

Mullakkal Chirappu and Navaratri are among the grandest festivals celebrated here, marked by traditional rituals, cultural performances, and elephant processions that attract large crowds. For anyone visiting Alappuzha, the Rajarajeswari Temple Mullakkal offers a meaningful glimpse into Kerala's rich temple heritage, spiritual traditions, and timeless devotion, making it a must-visit destination for pilgrims and cultural travelers alike.
