Description:

Sree Krishna Swamy Temple Ambalapuzha is one of the most revered Vaishnavite shrines in Kerala, located in the town of Ambalapuzha in Alappuzha district. Dedicated to Lord Krishna in his Parthasarathy form, the charioteer of Arjuna, the temple is believed to have been constructed in the 15th–17th century by the local ruler Chembakasserry Pooradam Thirunal Devanarayanan Thampuran. Built in classic Kerala temple architecture, the shrine features traditional sloping tiled roofs, intricate wood carvings, and mural paintings that reflect the artistic heritage of the region, making it an important pilgrimage centre for devotees across South India.

The temple holds a special place in Kerala's spiritual history because of its close association with the Guruvayoor Sree Krishna Temple. During the invasions of Tipu Sultan in 1789, the sacred idol from Guruvayoor was brought here for safekeeping for several years, strengthening a bond between the two shrines that devotees still honour today. It is popularly believed that Lord Guruvayoorappan visits Ambalapuzha every day to partake in the temple's famous offering, adding to the divine aura surrounding this sacred site.

Sree Krishna Swamy Temple Ambalapuzha is best known for its legendary Palpayasam, a sweet milk pudding offered daily to devotees. According to popular legend, Lord Krishna once appeared as a sage and challenged the local king to a game of chess, asking for grains of rice doubled on each square as his prize. Unable to fulfil the debt, the king was told to serve payasam to pilgrims until it was repaid, a tradition that continues even now and draws thousands of devotees seeking blessings and prasadam.

Beyond its religious significance, the temple is also credited with the origin of Ottamthullal, a classical performing art form created by poet Kunchan Nambiar within its premises. The annual Ambalapuzha Temple Festival, also known as the Champakulam Moolam boat festival, celebrates the arrival of the deity's idol and remains one of the most vibrant cultural events in Alappuzha. For anyone exploring temples in Kerala, Sree Krishna Swamy Temple Ambalapuzha offers a meaningful blend of devotion, history, and tradition.
