Sree Maha Ganapathy Temple Pazhavangaadi

Sree Maha Ganapathy Temple Pazhavangaadi is one of the most revered Ganesha shrines in Thiruvananthapuram, located in the historic Pazhavangadi area near East Fort, close to the famous Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple. Dedicated to Lord Ganapathy, the temple draws devotees from across Kerala who visit to seek blessings for the removal of obstacles and success in new beginnings. The main idol is uniquely installed in a seated posture with the right leg folded, a rare iconographic feature that distinguishes this shrine from other Ganesha temples in the region.

The temple's origins trace back to the 18th century, when the Travancore army's Nair Brigade was stationed at the Padmanabhapuram fort. According to popular belief, a devoted soldier troubled by a fearsome spirit near the fort discovered an idol of Lord Ganesha and began worshipping it for protection. When the Travancore capital shifted to Thiruvananthapuram in 1795, the idol was relocated along with the garrison, and a permanent shrine was eventually built at its present site around 1860 under the patronage of the Travancore royal family.

Reflecting its military origins, Sree Maha Ganapathy Temple Pazhavangaadi continues to be maintained by the Indian Army even today, a tradition rarely seen at any other Hindu shrine in India. The temple showcases traditional Kerala architecture, with sloping tiled roofs, carved wooden work and granite structures. Its sanctum houses 32 distinct forms of Lord Ganesha, along with shrines for Goddess Durga, Dharmasasta and Nagaraja, making it a spiritually rich destination for worshippers.

Devotees commonly offer coconuts at the temple as a symbol of overcoming life's obstacles. The temple witnesses large gatherings during festivals such as Vinayaka Chaturthi, Thiruvonam and Vijayadashami.
