Description:

Sree Maha Vishnu Temple Thirunelly is one of the most revered pilgrim centers in Wayanad, Kerala, nestled amid the forested slopes of the Brahmagiri hills near the Karnataka border. Dedicated to Lord Maha Vishnu, this ancient shrine is popularly called the "Kashi of the South" and is counted among the sacred Divya Desams associated with Vaishnavite tradition. Perched at an elevation of around 900 meters, the temple sits in a quiet valley surrounded by dense woods and mountain streams, offering visitors a rare blend of spiritual depth and natural beauty.

According to legend, Lord Brahma himself discovered an idol of Vishnu resting under a gooseberry (nelli) tree while traveling the earth, and with the help of the Devas, installed it at this very spot, giving the temple its name. The sanctum houses a four-armed idol of Vishnu holding the conch, discus, mace, and lotus, crafted in classical Kerala temple style with granite pillars and a sloped tiled roof. Historical records, including old copper plate inscriptions, suggest the site was an important pilgrimage town as far back as the tenth century.

The temple is especially known for ancestral rites such as Bali Tharpanam, performed on the banks of the nearby Papanasini stream, believed to help departed souls attain liberation. Many devotees also visit the Panchatheertham pond and the small Gunnika cave shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva nearby, making Thirunelly a place where Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva are all honored within a single sacred landscape.

Surrounded by thick forest and cool hill air, Sree Maha Vishnu Temple Thirunelly draws both devout pilgrims and travelers exploring Wayanad's quieter side. Festivals like Vishu and Shivrathri are celebrated with special rituals, drawing crowds from across South India. Whether one comes seeking blessings, performing rites for ancestors, or simply to experience the serenity of Brahmagiri, this temple remains a timeless spiritual landmark of Kerala.
