Description:

Sree Nagaraja Temple Mannarasala is one of Kerala's most revered serpent shrines, located near Haripad in the Alappuzha district. Dedicated to Nagaraja, the serpent deity, this ancient temple is believed to be linked to the legend of Parasurama, who is credited with reclaiming the land of Kerala from the sea. According to tradition, Parasurama sought the blessings of Nagaraja to desalinate the soil and make it fit for habitation, and the site where the Serpent King agreed to settle came to be known as Mannarasala.

The temple's origins are also tied to the story of a childless Brahmin couple, Vasudeva and Sreedevi, who cared for serpents injured in a forest fire by anointing them with turmeric, milk, and coconut water. Pleased with their devotion, Nagaraja is said to have promised rebirth as their son, and the couple was blessed with both a human child and a five-headed serpent child. This legend forms the basis of many rituals still followed at the temple today, most notably that the chief priestess, known as the Mannarasala Amma, is always a woman from the same ancestral family.

Sree Nagaraja Temple Mannarasala is spread across a dense grove containing thousands of serpent idols, making it one of the largest snake shrines in the region. Devotees visit seeking blessings for fertility, family wellbeing, and protection from ailments, often offering turmeric powder, milk, and specially prepared rice dishes as part of the temple's traditional rituals. The turmeric paste distributed here is widely believed to carry curative properties and is a major draw for pilgrims from across India.

Set amid coconut palms and paddy fields typical of central Travancore, the temple's peaceful surroundings add to its spiritual atmosphere. Annual festivals such as Ayilyam draw large crowds, and the site remains an important centre of devotion for those following serpent worship traditions in Kerala. For anyone exploring temples in Alappuzha, Sree Nagaraja Temple Mannarasala offers a unique glimpse into a living tradition of matrilineal priesthood and serpent reverence.
