Description:

Sree Peralassery Temple Mundalur is a revered Hindu shrine located in the village of Mundalur, Peralassery, in Kannur district, Kerala. Dedicated to Lord Subramanya, this ancient temple is considered one of the most significant pilgrim centres in the North Malabar region. Devotees from across Kerala and neighboring states visit this sacred site to seek blessings, drawn by its spiritual atmosphere, rich mythology, and centuries-old traditions that continue to attract thousands of worshippers throughout the year.

According to popular legend, the temple's origin traces back to the Thretha Yuga, when Lord Rama, along with Lakshmana and Hanuman, halted at this location while journeying towards Lanka in search of Sita. Sensing the divine presence of Lord Subramanya, and with the blessings of Lord Ayyappa, Rama consecrated his own royal bangle, known as "Peruvala," at the site, since Hanuman failed to arrive in time with a suitable idol. This event gave the place its name, Peruvalassery, which eventually evolved into Peralassery.

Sree Peralassery Temple is especially known for its unique tradition of serpent worship, where devotees offer hen's eggs, milk, and yellow rice to seek protection and prosperity. A distinctive rectangular pond within the temple complex allows pilgrims to take a holy bath before entering the sanctum, adding to the spiritual significance of their visit. The temple's architecture reflects traditional Kerala craftsmanship, blending simplicity with sacred symbolism.

The temple's annual festival, Kodiyettam, is a grand celebration marked by traditional art forms such as Thayambaka, Chakyarkoothu, Pattakam Ottan Thullal, and Kathakali, performed to honor the deity. Located conveniently near the Kannur–Koothuparamba route, close to Peralassery junction, the temple remains easily accessible to visitors and continues to be a cherished spiritual landmark of Kannur district.
