Description:

Sree Poornathrayeesa Temple Thrippunithura is one of the most revered Hindu shrines in Ernakulam district, located in the historic town of Thrippunithura near Kochi, Kerala. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, worshipped here in the unique form of Santhanagopala Moorthy, meaning the "savior of infants." Devotees, especially childless couples, visit this sacred shrine seeking blessings for progeny and family wellbeing. The temple once served as the presiding national deity of the erstwhile Kingdom of Cochin and was regarded as the foremost among the kingdom's eight royal temples.

According to popular legend, Lord Vishnu presented the sacred idol to Arjuna, the third Pandava brother, to help revive the ten deceased children of a grieving Brahmin family. Arjuna carried both the children and the idol back in his chariot, and a temple was later built in memory of this divine event, with its sanctum sanctorum designed in the shape of a chariot. This legendary origin gives the temple deep spiritual and mythological significance within Kerala's temple traditions.

Architecturally, the temple reflects classic Kerala temple design, with its western gopuram believed to date back several centuries and adorned with intricate wood carvings. The original wooden sanctum was rebuilt in concrete after a fire in the early twentieth century, though traditional copper and granite finishes were retained. The temple pond and surrounding grounds add to its serene, sacred atmosphere, drawing pilgrims and visitors throughout the year.

The temple's grandest celebration is the eight-day Vrishchikotsavam festival, held during the Malayalam month of Vrischikam, featuring elaborate elephant processions, traditional percussion, and rituals that attract devotees from across Kerala. Today, the temple stands as a vital spiritual and cultural landmark of Thrippunithura, reflecting the region's royal heritage, devotion, and enduring religious traditions passed down through generations.
