Sree Thirumandhamkunnu Bhagavathi Temple Angadippuram

Sree Thirumandhamkunnu Bhagavathi Temple Angadippuram is one of the most revered Hindu shrines in Kerala, standing atop a hillock in Angadipuram, Malappuram district. Once the capital of the Valluvanad Rajavamsham, this ancient temple has deep historical roots, having served as the starting point for the Nair warriors, known as Chavers, who marched to Thirunavaya to take part in the legendary Mamankam festival. The temple courtyard offers a scenic view of the surrounding countryside, adding to its spiritual charm.

According to local legend, King Mandhata of the Surya dynasty meditated upon Lord Shiva and received a sacred Shiva Lingam, which he carried to the hill at Thirumandhamkunnu. The Lingam is said to have become fixed to the ground at this very spot. Goddess Parvati, upset over the loss, sent Bhadrakali to retrieve it, and after a fierce battle, Parvati chose to remain within the Lingam herself, making the location eternally sacred. Bhadrakali and other deities were later installed nearby, giving the temple its unique dual darshan structure.

The presiding deity, Thirumandhamkunnilamma, worshipped as Bhadrakali, was the paradevatha of the Valluvanad kings and continues to be a powerful symbol of Shakti for devotees. The temple is especially known for the Mangalya Puja, a ritual believed to remove obstacles in marriage, along with other distinctive rites like Rigveda Laksharchana and Attangayeru, rarely found in other Kerala temples.

Every year, the temple hosts an elaborate eleven-day Pooram festival during March and April, drawing devotees from across the state. Elephant processions, chenda melam, and nagaswaram performances mark the celebrations, culminating in the sacred arat ritual by the riverside.
