Sri Rajarajeswara Temple Taliparamba

Sri Rajarajeswara Temple Taliparamba is one of the most sacred Shiva shrines in Kerala, located in Taliparamba town in Kannur district. Counted among the 108 ancient Shiva temples of Kerala, this temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva worshipped here as Rajarajeswara, meaning the "Emperor of Emperors." The shrine is also regarded as an important Shakti Peetham, drawing devotees from across the state and beyond who come seeking blessings and spiritual peace in its powerful and serene surroundings.

The temple's origins are steeped in legend and antiquity. It is believed that Lord Shiva gifted sacred Shivalingas to Goddess Parvati, one of which was installed here by the sage Maandhata, on the condition that the site have no cremation ground nearby. Later, sage Agastya is credited with performing the consecration, while the temple is thought to have been renovated in its present form by the Mushika (Kolathiri) dynasty kings centuries ago. Lord Rama is also said to have worshipped here after his return from Lanka, adding further sanctity to the site.

Architecturally, the temple reflects classic Kerala temple design, featuring a quadrangular sanctum with a two-tiered pyramidal copper roof and a namaskara mandapam in front. The shrine once had two towering seven-storey gopurams that were partially destroyed during Tipu Sultan's invasion in the eighteenth century, remnants of which can still be seen near the entrances. The temple follows distinctive customs, such as offering Tulsi instead of Bilva leaves, reflecting a unique blend of Vaishnavite and Shaivite traditions rarely seen elsewhere.

Devotees visiting Sri Rajarajeswara Temple Taliparamba can witness daily rituals, traditional poojas, and the grand celebration of Maha Shivaratri, which is the temple's most significant festival. Wednesdays hold special importance for worship here.
